Local Business Helps With American Idol Cost

As Candice Glover advances to the finale on American Idol, the city of Beaufort is getting ready for yet another celebration in her honor, but the city still owes a huge balance from the previous hometown event.

The news of making it to the top two was news that Candice Glover wanted to hear, but the entire Lowcountry as well, “We’re excited to have a hometown girl represent us so well and it’s an once in a lifetime opportunity for her and our community,” says Stephen Murray with New South Shirts.

For weeks now, Stephen Murray with New South shirts has been busy, making tee shirts, supporting the Lowcountry native, “We’re working three shifts, 5 a.m., one morning until midnight the next morning, trying to get it done and then we have a full production schedule as long as the other things were doing.

Murray says they have sold over 400 Candice Glover shirts, donating $5 from each shirt to the Hometown Community Fund, “We were able to give a $4,000 check to the Chamber of Commerce to go towards a celebration,” says Murray.

As of right now, the Chamber of Commerce still owes about  11,000 for the Hometown Celebration, but the city of Beaufort is not charging them for their services, the Chamber also says the county may lean in that same direction that will affect their price of $5,000.

“The chamber has been writing all the bills,” says Jamie Dailey-Vergara with the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce. “We are putting an extra amendment to our A Tax Funding, to try and help to see if we can get some of that money back, to help cover some of those costs.”

News costs could be added onto a new bill, once the details are finalized for a welcome home celebration for Candice. Murray says he is confident, they will be printing a whole lot more Candice Glover shirts when that final vote is counted.

The Chamber of Commerce will be hosting two more American Idol viewing parties, one for Wednesday and one for the finale on Thursday.
