Valentine's Day is right around the corner. With that in mind, 84 Savannah couples celebrated early by renewing their marriage vows at the Cathedral of St. John The Baptist this morning.
Terp Palmer could have married his wife Pat today.
“It was a beautiful day when we got married,” he says, “sort of like this.”
The lovebirds originally tied the knot 50 years ago.
The Palmers joined the other couples in celebrating their 25th, 50th and 60th year of marriage.
“Saw quite a few familiar faces that were also there celebrating their 25th,” says Sally Kennedy, who celebrated 25 years of marriage today. “We had been to their wedding and they had been to ours. Others we were surprised that they were there. It was great to celebrate with the whole church,” she says.
Today's ceremony brought many couples back to that very special day when they first said "I do".
“Even though it was 25 years ago it brought back a flood of memories, very pleasant memories,” says Brian Kennedy, who celebrated the occasion with his wife, Sally.
“It was very emotional to renew the vows and think about the 50 years and all the people that are no longer here but have been replaced by a lot of new people in our lives so we feel very blessed,” says Pat Palmer, who celebrates 50 years of marriage with husband, Terp.
All together, the couples stood and recited their vows before the entire congregation.
And in true tradition, a grand reception followed.
“We never had a cake with a cross on top before,” Pat Palmer added.
Today they will have that cake -- and so much more.
