Military Source reporter Ashley Jacobs gets inside the strategic military bases in our area to bring you stories about life at Parris Island, Fort Stewart and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.
Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island is an 8,095 acre military installation near Beaufort, South Carolina used for the training of enlisted Marines. Male recruits living east of the Mississippi River and female recruits from all over the United States report here to receive their initial training.
Fort Stewart covers 280,000 acres, which include parts of Liberty, Long, Bryan, Evans and Tattnall Counties. It is about 39 miles across from east to west, and 19 miles from north to south. Fort Stewart's main residents are members of the 3rd Infantry Division.
MCAS Beaufort is a United States Marine Corps air base located three miles northwest of the central business district of Beaufort, South Carolina. About 4200 personnel serve at the station and it is home to six F/A-18 Hornet squadrons including one Navy F/A-18 squadron. The mission of the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort is to provide support as an operational base for MAG-31, and the support units.
