The Rail Pub in Downtown Savannah has quite a gift for three organizations this holiday season.

I spoke with owners Trina Brown and Melissa Swanson about their donation, which is almost $25,000 in goods to local charities.

According to Trina, the idea stemmed from the success of the business…and also her father.  “My father told me years ago, ‘never forget where you come from and never get too wrapped up in your successes and try to help other people.’”

The Inner City Night Shelter, Safe Shelter and Austin House are all benefitting from the proceeds and profits garnered by The Rail Pub in 2009. Trina expects over 2,600 people to be impacted by the donation.  “The beds that were provided to the Inner City Night Shelter will add 2600 nights of shelter for the homeless.”

Melissa shared, “We were blessed with a really great year and we’ve had a few really good years and we decided it would be an opportunity for us to give something back to the community in a really bad economic time.”

She also believes that other businesses interested in helping the community will find if they just provide good customer service, they’ll find they’ll have a little bit extra money they can donate. “It’s a great feeling, it really is.”

Trina and Melissa have certainly taken hold of the reason for the season.  And that’s Good News.
