I’m out here on Tybee Island…in just a few days you’re going to see pirates, you’re going to see children, you are going to see lots of things going on because it’s going to be Tybee Island’s Pirate Fest!

I spoke with Paul DeVivo who helps market the festival.

The Pirate Fest originally came about as an idea to bring additional visitors and business to Tybee’s businesses in the off-season when they need it the most.

According to Paul, one of the biggest differences from last year is “rain insurance” in the form of a big tent.  “The bands will be under the tent and the people can fit under the tent to watch the bands also.”

Activities for children include petting zoos, face painting, puppet shows and even a kids’ costume contest.

“Kids love to dress up, just like adults do,” shares Paul.  “I think one of the reasons for the success of the event is that people love to dress up.”

The Pirates Fest is a major boost for Tybee’s businesses.  An impact study done in 2007 showed an impact of $1.6 million to the local businesses.
