Savannah-Chatham Metro Police have a man in custody after he resisted arrest and attempted to take an officer’s weapon.

Just before 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, officers saw a man on the corner of Skidaway and Laroche Ave. that fit the description of a subject that was wanted for questioning in connection with a burglary that took place March 8th.

The officer approached the subject and asked him for I.D. He claimed to be a SSU football player and complied with the officer by showing his identification. It was confirmed that he was the subject they were looking for.

The officer waited for backup and told the man that they needed to take him to the precinct for questioning. The subject, Antionio Lenton, 21, then became very combative and began to fight the officers. During the struggle, he attempted to remove one of the officer’s gun.

Lenton had to be subdued by force; officers were able to eventually take him into custody. It was later determined that Lenton was not a current SSU football player, but did play for the school in 2008.

He was charged with felony obstruction and attempting to remove a weapon from law enforcement. He was treated by EMS and transported to Chatham County Detention Center after he was questioned by detectives.
