This year is the 232nd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In the midst of an election year in the United States, it is sweet music to my ears to hear the active debate on what is the best way to keep improving our country. There is no other place on this earth where history is being made in such strides as it is right here on our turf. I can say this year, I am more proud to be an American than ever.

Independence Day is one of the most important holidays for me. I take deep pride in our historical roots as a nation, and as Americans. I know how blessed we are in this country, and think it keeps us grounded to remember our past, as we look ahead to the future.

My 4th of July memories were sometimes a little scary! I grew up with neighbors that were obsessed with fireworks. Every year, they bought them and shot them off all night long in our neighborhood’s cul-de-sac. I will never forget the time one went racing down the driveway toward me. I was already terrified of fireworks so I turned around bolted into the house screaming. Since then I have never been one to get close to them. Just seeing the fireworks stores along the side of the road gives me chills. Watching them from afar will be just fine for me! Forever !

Most Independence Days, I’m working. It’s usually the day following the 4th of July that I get to spend time with family and friends. My fondest memory comes from last year. I was sitting in my backyard in Richmond Hill. My wife and I live near the park where the fireworks are set off. It was nice to enjoy the show from our own yard. Last year we talked about how much fun it will be to enjoy the day with our first child. Well, Abbie Grace is now here and this Saturday will be her first firework show……can’t wait!

When the 4th of July rolled around back home in Pierce County, there was only one place to be...That was in Patterson...Every Independence Day, the Patterson Lions Club put on a spectacular fireworks show...For a small town, it was quite a production...We'd load up the family car and make the short ride from Blackshear to Patterson...Thousands of cars and trucks lined Georgia Highway 32...After the big show, we'd head back home and fire up the three foot sparklers...Somehow my dad always had a secret stash of those...Those were special nights...I sure do miss them....

What the 4th of July means to me. Independence Day in the U.S.A. is a time we celebrate the birthday of the greatest nation on this planet. For me and my family it is a time we stop and reflect on our many blessings. I migrated to this country when I was just five years old. As an immigrant I was told to go after your American dream. Because of the independence and freedom given to me by those who fought for it, I and every American has a chance to after their dreams. Whether it’s becoming a broadcast journalist or serving in the military, nothing is impossible. So I say happy birthday America, and thank you for everything.
