High Gas Prices Keep People Closer to Home by Jason Davis

July 4, 2008

Whether they're grilling out, or playing outdoors, more people are doing it at home this 4th of July weekend.

"I’m not leaving it’s just too much to pay for gas," said Savannah resident Gary Young. Young is like many Americans feeling the pain of high gas prices. AAA estimates travel will drop by two percent this weekend. In Georgia that represents just over one million people who are choosing not to hit the road. “In the past we've done Orlando Disney world for the 4th of July, and maybe Detroit, but not this year," said Young. "Gas is a little bit more than we wanted to spend so we're just kind of going to take it easy, stay home and relax do everything here," said Alton Ramsey of Savannah.

And while some people are changing travel plans and looking to local events for entertainment, others are forking out the extra dollar a gallon it takes to get to their destination. Gus Young of Savannah said, “Gas prices are going to get higher than they are now. People might as well get used to it."

Right now the average price of gas in Georgia is four dollars and two cents a gallon up one dollar and 24 cents from last year.
