Dead Fish! by BOBETH YATES

Monday, October 6, 2008

A lake view home on Stonebridge Drive sounds like a great place to be, but Battery Point Resident Bobby Richardson said when you take a closer look the view is not so nice. "We have rotting ducks floating out on the fungus, we have rotting fish."

The dead fish and birds began appearing on the water a few weeks ago. So far no one knows why, and the community said they were not getting any help to solve the problem. "I called the health department and they told me it was not a health issue, and I don't understand how rotting flesh, bugs and bacteria aren't," said Battery Point Resident, John Sandberg.

Sandberg also said the scent of the rotting fish and ducks is over whelming, however the smell is not their only concern. "Rotting flesh creates ecoli and other bacteria, those bacteria are absolutely harmful to human health."

Residents said the stagnate water was also increasing the mosquito population. They fear mosquitoes will soon transmit whatever is killing the fish to humans.

Authorities said it was not the case, however the community is not buying the story. "If anyone tells me they will step in the water and put there hand down in there and then touch their mouth, I will shut up," Richardson.

Residents said they will continue to fight. Stonebridge community members said they were hoping to get help from county officials, but so far their efforts have be unsuccessful.
