Savannah Fire & Emergency Services investigators are probing an early morning fire on Savannah’s east side that severely damaged a vacant house.
Firefighters were sent to E. 37th and Ott streets around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday on a report of a structure fire.
When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames pouring from the upstairs of the two-story, brick house, and it took them nearly an hour to extinguish the blaze.
The area of 37th Street between Waters Ave. and Harmon St. was closed during the firefighting operation, as was Ott Street between 36th and Seiler streets. Both streets were re-opened to traffic about 9:20 a.m.
There were no injuries as a result of the incident. Initial indications show the fire possibly started in the back of the first floor of the house and then quickly spread to the second floor and attic.
SFES investigators were on scene this morning attempting to determine an exact cause and location of ignition for the fire.
