Midway police bust none other than a lemonade stand, because the three girls running it didn't have a business license.  The three girls thought if they sold enough lemonade, they could make money to go to the water park Splash in the Boro.  Well they thought wrong.  Midway police say, they're breaking city law and have to go.

“It’s kind of crazy that we couldn’t sell lemonade.  It was fun, but we had to listen to the cops and shut it down,” 14-year-old Casity Dixon said.

The girls had only been opened for one day before Midway’s police chief and another officer cruised by and saw the stand.

“They told us to shut it down [and we didn't know why],” 10-year-old Skylar Roberts said.

“We had told them, we understand you guys are young, but still, you’re breaking the law, and we can’t let you do it anymore.  The law is the law, and we have to be consistent with how we enforce the laws,” Midway Police Chief Kelly Morningstar said.

By a city ordinance, the girls must have a business license, peddler’s permit, and food permit to set up shop, even on residential property.  The permits cost $50 a day and a total of $180 per year.  City officials said it’s their job to keep everyone safe and healthy, and there can be no exceptions to the rules.

“We were not aware of how the lemonade was made, who made the lemonade, of what the lemonade was made with, so we acted accordingly by city ordinance,” Chief Morningstar said.

“It’s almost like they don’t have anything better to do.  I’m going to let it go.  I’m trying to teach them good.  I don’t think if I keep on, it’ll teach them a good thing,” Amy Roberts said.

So the law wins, and what started out as three girls’ dream of a fun summer business is now just a piece of plywood.

Since the lemonade stand was shut down, the girls have been doing extra chores and yard work to make money for the water park.

I'm surprised they weren't required to get FDA approval before selling their lemonade. "It's the law" is a poor excuse. Clearly, the city of Midway, Georgia doesn't want young people to succeed. It'd rather make a profit from an "evil" business or shut it down.

This is an exact example of why we do not need so many police. They are just burning a hole in the American budget, doing busy work & not needed. Police departments should be downgraded and cut by at lease half to help supplement paying down the federal and city deficits. Or wait...then there will be more lawless lemonade stands run a muck, omg!

What a great lesson the police chief has taught these girls. Girls do not try to get ahead, do not try to do something worth while. Be lazy get on wellfare. Reminds me of my city where the kids have to get a business license to cut grass. We all need to get together, WERE MAD AS HELL AND WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE. Impeach the mayor, vote the city council out and fire the police chief Let the girls mother run for mayor.

What a joke! My daughter (11 years old) recently read the book: Kidpreneurs http://Kidpreneurs.org (Entrepreneurship for kids 6-13 yrs old) and started an online company and received her first order last week. These safety officers need to find something better to do!

truly funny! must have been slow crime day and the 'public safety officers' were not able to amuse themselves otherwise. good god they have made asses of themselves...picking on kids selling lemonade. is there no end to the ridiculous crap we must endure as citizens? if i was chief of police it would be my standing order that all lemonade stands are to be supported by the uniformed cops. no stand may be driven past without a stop to buy at least one cup of lemonade per uniformed officer. i hope that the local voters will keep this assinine act in mind as thwey vote next time.

People who support the police in this instance show what is gravely wrong with this country. We have become sheep who blindly follow dictates of government instead of acting as the true owners of government. Try reading the Constitution and actually understanding it.

I guess mud pies are out of the question. Prolly bring in the FBI, CIA, And white house staff. Taxation is inevitable since the girls now own a business and Barrack wats the money. It could reduce the national deficit and we would not have to increase the debt ceiling. Thank you Chief Kelly Morningstar. The system needs more folks like you.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.. it is the spirit of the law that needs to be enforced not the letter of it.

Here is the short version...50 dollars a day = 350 dollars a week and 180 for the annual fee, that's a lot of lemonade to sell to be able to just make enough to take a trip. Obviously they do this in hopes you will buy it from stores and businesses as to not affect the people who pay their salaries. They hide behind the "public safety" because they don't know what was used to make the lemonade making it a public health issue. Amazing how by getting the license and paying the money makes it safe. The only thing this reinforces is that the poor stay poor and the rich get richer. I for one am disgusted by this and know that there is nothing that can/will be done to change it. Land of the free huh, guess its all a matter of perspective.

Let's just hope the IRS hasn't heard about this yet. However knowing them.. they probably already have a statement in the mail to these poor girls.
