Breast Cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 15-through-54
And while most people think that only women over the age 30 get the disease that is not the case. That is what sunday's the "pink tea" celebration is all about.
Receiving news that you have breast cancer is never easy, but especially for younger women under the age of 35. In fact, many weren't even aware you get the disease at such a young age. That's the whole meaning behind Sunday's Annual Pink Tea Celebration of Life, with the focus mainly on awareness.
"It's very important for women to understand, that because you don't start screening at 40 to be aware that it can occur at very young age," said Amy Heyel, Breast Cancer Survivor.
That diagnosis at a very young age led to the founding of the Young Survival Coalition, which provides a support group for those receiving that dreaded news.
"When you're young, you're working, and you're raising kids," added Heyel. "And you're getting married and trying to have kids, and you're told that you can't, you're going to look to someone who's had the same experience, so that's what we're trying to create with the YSC."
"For me, they were a huge help, " said Abby Kover, Another Breast Cancer Survivor. "Because it was somebody who knew exactly where I had been, where I was going, what I was going through."
And that helps make a painful process just a little easier.
All three of Savannah's hospitals also had representatives on hand to answer any questions survivors might have.
