Hundreds pack into City Hall in Port Wentworth Thursday evening.
Port Wentworth residents shared more than just close quarters the city hall meeting this evening – they share the goal of extending Benton Boulevard into Port Wentworth.

It gives the community access to two new schools -- West Chatham Preparatory and the K- 8 School at Godley Station.

“It means a lot because that means it would be in an area where kids think they do have a future – and they have a different way of thinking and doing things,” says Port Wentworth resident Melvin Raymond.

West Chatham Prep leaders were overwhelmed by the support.

“The community support and the fact that they’re including us in the extension of the Benton blvd road will really bring in a quality program for the community,” says West Chatham Prep Director Rodney Jenkins.

Proponents of the plan say it also brings better access to emergency centers, shopping and will ease congestion along Highway 17.

Port Wentworth Mayor Glenn Jones moved to enacted a committee to study the area and report its findings back city council.

The expansion project is expected to cost about $1.5 million dollars.

That cost would be shared between the City and several other contractors.
