UGA Edges Closer to a National Championship by The Coastal Source

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

With UGA's win over Fresno St. last night the Georgia Bulldogs moved one step closer in becoming college baseball's national champions. Things looked shaky for the bulldogs last night until All-American shortstop Gordon Beckham launched his 27th career homerun in the eighth inning to spark a rally that powered the national No. 8 seeded Bulldogs to a 7-6 victory over Fresno State in the first game of the College World Series finals.

There was little doubt about Beckham's 27th homer of the season, which he powered deep into the left-field seats. It enabled him to claim the school record for career home runs with 52, one more than Josh Morris from 2004-06. But Beckham wasn't the only bulldog responsible for UGA's late game rally, run-scoring doubles by Matt Cerione and Joey Lewis finished the comeback and helped deflate Fresno State's Cinderella hopes of winning at Omaha.

Game 2 of the College World Series will be played tonight at historical Rosenblatt Stadium in which Georgia hopes to clinch their first national title in 18 years with a victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs. So now the question is, which set of bulldogs will come out victorious in this year's College World Series Final?
