SSU Basketball Schedule

A slate of 16 home games including dates with New Orleans and Bowling Green highlights the 2008-09 Savannah State University men's basketball schedule.

Coming off a 13-18 season, the Tigers are slated to play a 29-game schedule with 16 contests at Tiger Arena. SSU will play teams from 13 different Division I conferences such as Big 12, Conference USA, Mid Eastern, Southern, Big East, Atlantic 10, Mid-American, Big 10, Atlantic Coast, Sun Belt, Big South, Atlantic Sun and Independents.

"We tried to schedule more home games this year and this year we were able to get 16, which are the most we have had since moving to Division I", said head coach Horace Broadnax. "If we can take care of home, then we will be ok."

Broadnax, who is beginning his fourth season as head coach, will have SSU open the season with a four-game home-stand beginning on November 14 against in-state foe  Brewton-Parker followed by North Florida (Nov. 16), Coastal Carolina (Nov. 18) and New Orleans (Nov. 22).

"Hopefully we can start out of the gate very strong," says Broadnax of opening the season with four starting home games.

Following trips to Clemson and Michigan, the Tigers return home on December
1 to face Bowling Green.

SSU hosts a three-game set against Kennesaw State (Dec. 16), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Dec. 18) and South Carolina State (Dec. 20), after visits to St. Louis and Georgetown. SSU travels to Notre Dame on Dec. 22 before closing out the 2008 portion of the schedule with a home game against Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 30.

Savannah State will play at Georgetown, Broadnax's alma mater, on Dec. 8 but the Hoyas are schedule to play at SSU next season. "We have the opportunity to have them come here next year. We have a young team but we expect to have a large number of returnees next season. If we can get better, it can help the program 2-3 years down the road", says Broadnax.

The Tigers open the new year with road games at Alabama-Birmingham and Oklahoma State but return to Tiger Arena to face Talladega on Jan. 12.

After three games on the road, SSU returns home on Jan. 28 to play Allen and hosts Longwood on Feb. 7.

SSU closes out the schedule with four home contests against Utah Valley State (Feb. 14), Florida Atlantic (Feb. 18), Carver (Feb. 26) and North Carolina Central (Mar. 2).
