Frank's Army: Meet Benedictine's Joey Rutherford by Benedictine

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Joey Rutherford is a senior center on the BC football team.  A three year starter, Joey anchors the line for Coach Herndon’s ball control offensive scheme.  Patrick Poland caught up with him in the media center last week to ask him about his life and football. With the taciturn, direct style of so many offensive linemen, Joey responded below.

What’s your first football memory?

"I was the MVP on my little league football team."

Do you have a personal philosophy relating to football?

"Control your anger and better yourself on the field.  Learn to be a teammate and appreciate others.  The offensive line works like a unit and its success depends on each lineman’s drive."

What is your favorite thing about Coach Cooper?

"I think it’s cool that he coached at Georgia and Ole Miss.  This experience helped make him a great coach."

How about Coach Herndon?

"He’s a real old school coach.  He’s harder than other coaches.  I understand that and I respect him for it.  He pushed me to be the player that I am."

What about your  personal goals this year?

"I’d like to be All-State."

Do you have a shot at college play?

"I’ll play the game as long as it lets me.  I’ve sent transcripts to different colleges and whichever accepts me, I’ll play for, just to keep playing the game."

What’s your favorite NFL team?

"I’m a Broncos fan."

How about a college team?

"My family is from Columbia, so we pull for USC."

What are your favorite subjects?

"I’m big on history and English."

What’s on your iPod right now?

"Some kind of classic rock."

What’s your favorite food?

"I like a rib eye or NY strip steak."

Who’s the toughest team on the schedule this year?

"Charlton County. No question."
