I was born in Savannah in 1953 at the old Telfair Pavilion on the south end of Forsyth park. A few months later I was back downtown on the west end of the park for the 1954 Saint Patrick's day parade, haven't missed a parade since.
We lived on the southside of Chatham county on what was once a farm and spent the summer each year on Tybee.
I got my first boat when I was 12 and my first car when I was 16.
By the time I got the car I had already been working on the radio for about 4 months.
My first station was WBYG in Savannah playing Big Bands, country and gospel music on the weekends.
When I was a senior in high school I was working for the local Top 40 station WSGA.
Playing rock and roll on the radio while in high school was a lot of fun.
Check www.thegoodtimer.com for more on WSGA.
I worked for a lot of radio stations over the years, mostly in Savannah.
In 1987 I was working in Macon at WNEX radio when the local NBC affiliate asked me to audition for a TV anchor job. I didn't get the job, they hired a guy who was better at sitting still and looking earnest.
They did, however, give me a chance to shoot feature stories for their 5:00pm newscast.
I did all kinds of odd stories, including one with a World War II vet who was teaching a bunch of Japanese exchange students how to shoot assault weapons.
That was one of the stories on my audition tape when I was offered the job of hosting the morning show on the Savannah NBC TV station.
20 years later I am pretty sure I am the only air talent ever to have been fired from that job twice. Fifteen years apart.
Now at WJCL/FOX28 I am proud once again be waking up the Coastal Empire and Low County with a smile and an eye for the the things that make this community unique. That's dictionary "unique" not mediaspeak "unique"
